Human Gross Anatomy at University of Hawaii Mar. 2010

We had a great opportunity to study Human Anatomy with a focus on dissection at the University of Hawaii organized by Japan Shiatsu College. We would like to thank the Japan Shiatsu College to make this experience possible. The six students, Lona Leveque
, Toshinori Kotake, Toshiya Masuda, Kanako Saito, Mayumi Koyama, and Guillaume Nogue, took part in this great oppourtunity this year, and they reported this wonderful experience to us as following.

I really enjoyed my trip in Hawaii. The dissection workshop was really interesting. The teachers were good and competent, as well as very friendly. I really have the feeling that I learned a lot during this anatomy dissection. I think everything was well organized. I did not expect we would have free breakfast and lunch, so I am quite happy with it. I enjoyed meeeting the students of the Japan Shiatsu College as well as the one from Hawaii Isen Shiatsu School. I think it's a great opportunity to meet new people, to learn from each other and to share nice time together. I enjoyed visiting Hawaii Isen Shiatsu School. I felt really lucky to receive Shiatsu from him and to learn so much from him. I really thank all of you for giving me the opportunity to do this in Hawaii. Like I said I feel extremely lucky to have done dissection as usually even French medecine students have to wait more than five years before being allowed to do dessection by themselves. Thank you again, I am more than happy!!

First of all
, I would like to thank the people who had generously agreed to donate the bodies of their families to the dissection practice. I also would like to thank teachers who planned this practice and gave me the opportunity to attend. I thank all the people who were involved.
We, the Canadian team dissected a male body. The dissection began with the removal of skin from the back of the arms. It was hard to remove the skin from the vein and nerve because the subcutaneous fat was thin. When that ended, next we did subcutaneous fat removal. It was hard work to separate the nerve and blood vessels while removing the subcutaneous fat. The group next to us dissected a female body and it seemed hard to remove the subcutaneous fat since females have more fat than males. The thin nerve was not as solid as other nerves and easy to cut so we had to pay attention to not cut the nerve. The vein was flat with blue purple color and the artery was red and it was elastic and tubular. I saw various blood vessels and nerve encircled and stretched, and I admired deeply the structure of the human body. Removing the fat reveals the muscle membrane. The muscle membrane was a little hard. Under the muscle membrane reveals the muscle. I could see the structure of the muscle. I was impressed to see the trapezius muscle, deltoid muscle, latissimus dorsi and humerus.
On the 2nd day, I wanted to see the direction and position of the heart, thickness of the main artery, lungs and diaphragm etc. Although I did not understand which were the ventricle and the atrium in the heart at the beginning, when the circulation of the blood vessels was confirmed, I was able to see which was which. I was also amazed when I touched a certain vein valve which prevents blood inversion and when I touched the lung which felt like a sponge. Muscle contraction in the rectus femoris muscle, lateral vastus muscles, intermediate vastus muscles, medial vastus muscle, makes legs work and I understood it by looking and touching it. Also the sciatic nerve was revealed under the muscle that was composed of a gluteus maximus muscle, gluteus medius muscles, and gluteus minimus muscles. They were flat and thick. It reminded me that shiatsupractors apply pressure on the sciatic nerve known as the Namikoshi point. There were four muscles such as rectus abdominis muscle, external oblique muscles, internal oblique muscles, and transversus abdominis in the front side of the abdomen, and under these four muscles revealed a greater omentum which was exactly the same as in the text book.  Furthermore the abdomen internal organs were arranged systematically under the greater omentum and it was very interesting. The structure of the muscle of the limbs had logicality and interesting as well, and I was absorbed in confirming the blood vessel system, nerve, and muscle of the limbs. I learned these subjects at school; however, it was always exciting to discover and to see them and touch them for real. On the last day, I dissected the brain and touched the cerebrum, mid brain, the cerebellum, the diencephalon, brain stem etc. and I was impressed deeply by the function of the brain which dominates the human body.
I had trouble with the smell of the formalin that was used for the body; however, it was a valuable experience to me and it was all because of the guidance from the teachers and the help from the other students. Although it was a short period, it was an excellent experience to understand deeply about the human body structure and I appreciate the opportunity to participate in the practice. Doing the dissection on a real human body was precious knowledge that I can’t forget about. It was a very significant opportunity for me concerning in medical treatment as a shiatsupractor to participate in a dissection practice which is rare in Japan.I realized that dissecting on a real body is different from leaning in school. I strongly felt by seeing and touching the structure and the real muscle, internal organ, thin nerve and blood vessel that there is nothing unnecessary in order to live, and everything has an important role. I also confirmed that the structure of the human body is really complicated and I felt realistically that the human body is very mysterious. I will not forget this experience and what I have learned from it for my future as a shiatsupractor.

Through This wonderful experience of doing volunteer Shiatsu at Kuakini hospital in Waikiki and meeting so many Shiatsu practitioners from Hawaii and Japan, I definitely believe that healing people with Shiatsu is a very pleasant thing to do as a career.
People who work for long hours such as doctors and nurses need a relaxation because their muscles were very tight under stressful work environment. I provided fifteen to twenty minutes Shiatsu treatments to about ten people for three hours straight. It was not easy but it made me so happy when I saw them relaxed and their smile on their faces after treatments.
We already learned anatomy and physiology but we learned so much more during the human dissection at University of Hawaii. First of all, I appreciate that people who donated their bodied to the university. Moreover we were so fortune to be invited to the dissection program from Japan Shiatsu College and University of Hawaii. We apply Shiatsu points on body and now I know why and how Shiatsu stimulates muscles, blood circulation, nervous system, digestive system and so on.
I also enjoyed meeting Shiatsu practitioners from Hawaii and Japan. I had a wonderful time to exchange Shiatsu with them and to hear their successful stories. I have learned Shiatsu almost a year. Although my Shiatsu is not perfect yet, this opportunity motivated me to continue to improve my Shiatsu more and more.

Aloha!! Hawaii was GREAT!! It was an amazing experience! The whole organization when we were in Honolulu was very good!! I really enjoyed to go to the hospital for the volunteer fieldwork and the dissection was really unique experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity!! It was very well organized and really professional. It was really interesting to be able to have a new approach, not only exterior, to the human body. I felt really lucky to join this trip and have the wonderful opportunity to meet all this students of Japan and Hawaii and these master of Shiatsu from all over the world! Thank you very much. Mahalo!!
